Introducing the new Xserve

Quad-Core Xeon 64-bit server

The new Xserve works faster, harder, and more efficiently than ever before. And it all starts with the 64-bit Quad-Core Intel Xeon "Harpertown" 5400 series processor. Thanks to this powerful 45-nanometer Intel Core microarchitecture processor, Xserve now runs at blazing speeds up to 3.0GHz. Each Intel Xeon processor has its own 1600MHz system bus for up to 25.6GB/s of bandwidth, so there's even faster access to main memory.

Four processing cores deliver an incredible performance boost across the board. A massive 12MB of L2 cache per processor keeps instructions and data close to the processor cores, reducing frontside bus transactions and memory latency. Intel's cache technology allows core pairs to share 6MB of cache. If one core happens to be idle or needs less cache resources, the other can fully utilize it. The enhanced SSE4 SIMD engine handles 128-bit vector computations in a single cycle.

Flexible strength

Xserve supports up to 32GB of 800MHz DDR2 ECC FB-DIMM (fully buffered DIMM) memory, providing a 64 percent throughput boost over the previous-generation Xserve.1 And over most of the competition.

In every Xserve, there are two PCI Express 2.0 expansion slots — one 8-lane and one 16-lane — with up to 8GB/s of bandwidth for intensive I/O devices. That’s up to four times the bandwidth of any previous Xserve. One slot can be configured as a PCI-X slot for compatibility with existing devices.

Serious services

Leopard box

Xserve has the power and performance you need to run a network, build a business, and lead an industry. Now, with Leopard Server onboard, it couldn’t be any easier. Mac OS X Server v10.5 Leopard brings its enhanced multicore performance, astounding system improvements, and powerful new features to Xserve. Now you can easily set up and manage servers, add new clients to the network, share calendars, schedule meetings, and more. Leopard Server also offers incredibly smart and efficient services to your network, including iCal Server, Wiki Server, and Podcast Producer.

Xserve isn’t just for the Mac anymore. With out-of-the-box support for Mac, Windows, UNIX, and Linux clients, Xserve is the easiest way to provide powerful, innovative network and Internet services for multiplatform workgroups. And there are no client-access licenses, which means no extra fees. Leopard Server supports 64-bit addressing and large LUNs without requiring you to buy a special enterprise version.

Rack it up

Xserve fits into all types of standard racks and cabinets, so you can use what you already have or buy new racks right off the shelf to meet your specific requirements. There’s no need for a special “Apple rack.” You can install the server in any of several kinds of racks, including open four-post racks and cabinets from 24 to 36 inches deep.

The Xserve uses two well-placed ducts to improve air circulation. Fans run only as fast as they need to — for reduced power usage, longer fan life, and less noise.

Ports and slots

Each Xserve features dual FireWire 800 ports, two USB 2.0 ports on back panel (and one on the front), and an industry standard DB-9 serial port, and two open PCI Express slots (one half-length (6.6-inch) configurable slot (x8 PCI Express 2.0 or 133MHz PCI-X) and one 9.25-inch x16 PCI Express 2.0 slot). Also included, built-in ATI Radeon X1300 PCI Express graphics board with 64MB of GDDR3 memory and single-link mini-DVI port; mini-DVI to VGA adapter included, and two independent 10/100/1000BASE-T (Gigabit) RJ-45 Ethernet interfaces with support for jumbo frames.

Lights-out management

No matter where you are — around the corner or around the globe — you can always stay on top of things with the lights-out management processor integrated into Xserve. It’s the ultimate remote control, letting you turn systems on, off, or reboot from a remote Ethernet connection. No extra hardware or software purchase is required — everything you need to unchain yourself from your server room is included. And your management sessions are always encrypted to ensure the privacy and security of your data.
